Rodgers & Hammerstein’s
Cinderella in Concert

Rodgers & Hammerstein’s Cinderella is ultimately a story about identity. Beneath the familiar fairy tale is a young woman learning that her worth has never been determined by her circumstances. Rather than approaching the production as a spectacle of magical transformation, I wanted to explore the quieter courage required to remain compassionate in a world that continually asks us to become hardened. Cinderella’s greatest strength is not that she receives a gown or glass slipper; it is that she continues to choose kindness, hope, and integrity despite the life she has been given.

The concert format made imagination and collaboration central to the experience. This production brought Talon Theatre and the Instrumental Music Department together for a shared theatrical event in which actors, vocalists, instrumentalists, designers, and technicians were equally responsible for shaping the world of the story. The orchestra became an active visual and musical storyteller, while thoughtful staging, costumes, lighting, sound, and movement allowed the audience to complete the kingdom in their own minds. The simplicity of the concert form created space for the music and relationships to remain at the center.

My focus throughout the rehearsal process was on building truthful relationships beneath the fairy-tale structure. Ella and Topher are both searching for authenticity beyond the expectations placed upon them, while Marie represents the faith that helps another person recognize what has always existed within them. Every musical phrase, staging choice, and visual element reinforced the idea that real transformation begins long before the ball. It begins when we choose compassion over bitterness, service over status, and hope over fear.
