Production Concept & Artistic Vision

A memory shaped through family and imagination, where storytelling becomes a way to preserve what we love and discover who we are becoming.

Little Women begins with a fundamental human need: the desire to tell our stories. We share our experiences, joys, sorrows, hopes, and dreams because we long to be understood and because storytelling allows us to understand one another more deeply. I approached the play through Jo’s imagination, allowing the world to feel as though it were being remembered and written into existence before the audience. Her writing became more than an ambition; it became the way she preserved her family, made meaning from loss, and carried the people she loved with her as life continued to change.

At the center of the production was the relationship between the March sisters. Jo, Meg, Beth, and Amy each imagine a different future, and the production resisted the idea that one path was more meaningful than another. Jo pursues artistic independence, Meg chooses a life grounded in partnership and family, Amy seeks recognition and the opportunity to grow beyond how others perceive her, and Beth reveals the extraordinary courage found within a quiet life. Their dreams sometimes place them in conflict, but their love continually draws them back together. Through ordinary rituals, playful memories, arguments, disappointments, and moments of profound loss, the sisters shape one another into the women they become.

The physical and emotional world of the production was built around memory, transformation, and the comfort of home. Scenic elements shifted fluidly as Jo’s recollections carried the audience between moments, while movement and ensemble storytelling allowed the past to remain present even as time moved forward. The rehearsal process was rooted in resilience, compassion, and the belief that artists grow most fully within a community that supports them. Ultimately, the production asked how we honor the different lives people are called to pursue—and how love, storytelling, and shared memory help us remain connected even when we must learn to let one another go.
