The Pirate Queen

The Pirate Queen was deeply connected to my own artistic journey and Irish heritage. The score carries the rhythm, melody, and movement of the music I grew up with through Irish dance. From the harp to the Irish whistle, the orchestration created a theatrical world rooted in memory, culture, and home. At its core, The Pirate Queen is a love story in a myriad of forms: love for another person, love for one’s people, love for a country, and love for the identity that gives us a sense of belonging. Throughout the production, love became the force that continually called the characters home, whether that home was a person, a place, or a feeling.

The production was also shaped by the musical’s exploration of women in leadership. Grace O’Malley and Queen Elizabeth lead with confidence, emotional intelligence, heart, and bravery. Their strength does not require them to abandon their femininity or imitate traditional ideas of masculine authority. They lead as they are. I wanted the production to honor the many ways women can hold power while also revealing the personal sacrifices, expectations, and cultural pressures each woman carries. Although Grace and Elizabeth stand on opposing sides of a political and cultural conflict, both are fighting to lead within worlds that continually question their authority.

The physical world of the production was built through integrated movement, Irish dance, stage combat, ensemble storytelling, and a heightened musical vocabulary. These elements carried the story through adventure, cultural conflict, sacrifice, love, and belonging. Honesty became the central value of our rehearsal process. The actors were asked to move beyond performing for approval and instead honor the characters, the story, and the audience. By trusting that they were already enough, the students became more courageous, present, and truthful storytellers. The goal was not simply to create a large and visually exciting musical, but to build an honest theatrical experience that celebrated cultural identity, courageous leadership, and the love that reminds us where we belong.
